Navigate more sustainably and fuel savings with eco-friendly routing in Google Maps Platform

Eco-friendly routing is now available to developers in Preview. Improving fuel efficiency can help lower your fleet’s fuel/energy usage and CO2 emissions. Starting today, businesses can help lower the carbon footprint of their fleets, reduce fuel costs, and contribute to a more sustainable future.

In addition to engine type, other factors such as road conditions, real-time traffic, and vehicle speed can also be taken into consideration when calculating the eco-friendly route. This allows for a more accurate and efficient routing solution that takes into account multiple variables to determine the best route for fuel efficiency. By providing eco-friendly routing as an option, the Routes API empowers businesses and individuals to make a positive impact on the environment and promote sustainable transportation. The feature is available in preview, and users can start testing and incorporating it today.

How Google Maps Platform estimates fuel efficiency

The Routes API estimates fuel and energy efficiency using insights from the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and considers a number of factors when determining the most fuel-efficient route, including:

  • Average fuel or energy consumption based on regionally representative vehicles per engine type (petrol or gas, diesel, hybrid, or electric)

  • Steepness of hills on your route

  • Stop-and-go traffic patterns

  • Types of roads (such as local roads or highways)

By taking these factors into account, the API helps drivers make informed decisions about the best way to reach their destination, while also reducing their carbon footprint and reducing fuel costs. Additionally, the API provides information on relative fuel savings between different routes, so drivers can choose the option that works best for them.

More efficient routes can mean increased driver efficiency, less travel time, and lower fuel consumption. For example, delivery companies or ridesharing companies can use eco-friendly routes to measure estimated fuel consumption and savings for a single trip, multiple trips, or even across their entire fleet to improve their business performance. The Routes API is a valuable tool for companies looking to adopt eco-friendly routing strategies, as it provides accurate and up-to-date information on the most fuel-efficient routes available.

How 28East Can Help You

By utilising advanced mapping technologies, we are able to create optimised routes for our customers that are designed to reduce their carbon footprint. Our routes take into account a number of factors, such as traffic patterns, road conditions, and vehicle efficiency, in order to create the most efficient and environmentally friendly route possible. In addition to being eco-friendly, our routing solutions are also designed to help our customers save on fuel costs. By creating optimised routes that avoid unnecessary detours, we are able to help our customers reduce their fuel consumption, resulting in cost savings and a reduced environmental impact.
